the Inland Register
(From the May 19, 2016 edition of the Inland Register)
Immaculate Heart Retreat Center (IHRC) will be offering a Serenity 12-Step Retreat Friday-Sunday, June 3-5, under the leadership of Jesuit Father Thomas Weston. The title of the retreat is “Practical, Simple, and Basic: The Genius of the 12 Steps.”
Participants will look at the steps and traditions of the program, increasing familiarity with the simple behaviors which have the potential to change lives.
Father Weston has lived in Oakland, Calif., since 1981. An active member of the recovery community since 1976, he was ordained a priest in 1978, and is a reader, a gardener, a member of the Jesuit Community, and does some pastoral work in Oakland. He also has taught English as a Second Language in China, Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar. He presently travels nationally and internationally giving 12-Step Retreats and assisting addicts with spiritual direction and guidance.
Cost of the retreat is $196 per person, and $302 per couple, or $110 per commuter.
• The following Tuesday, June 7, IHRC will offer “Barbecue with Bishop Skylstad,” beginning with Mass at 5 p.m. and ending by 8 p.m.
Besides prayer and a barbecue dinner, Bishop Skylstad will offer a talk. On June 7, the bishop will address “The Power of Mercy in a Troubled World.” Subsequent talks are titled “The Crises of Leadership in Our World: How are we genuine “Salt and Light’?” on Tuesday, July 12, and “The Church – A Prophetic Leader of Relationships in a Global World” on Tuesday, Aug. 23.
Bishop William Skylstad is Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Spokane and the former Bishop of Yakima. He also served terms as vice president and president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Cost for the event is $25 per person. Please register in advance.
• “A Pilgrimage of Mercy” is the title of a silent day of prayer focused on Pope Francis’s Jubilee Year of Mercy on Wednesday, June 15 at IHRC.
The day begins at 9 a.m. and concludes by 3 p.m.
Father Dan Barnett will present the day’s reflections. Father Barnett is rector of Bishop White Seminary, Spokane, and Director of Vocations for the Spokane Diocese. In addition, he has been designated as a Missionary of Mercy by Pope Francis.
During the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis invites everyone to make a pilgrimage to the Merciful Father. Transformed by that Divine Mercy, we are sent into the world as apostles of mercy. That pilgrimage passes through the Door of Mercy who is Jesus Christ.
The day begins with recitation of the rosary. It includes two conferences, opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Mass, and lunch, and concludes with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Cost is $38 per person, or $48 with the use of a private room for the day.
