Summer Youth Institute connects theology, ecology, economics

the Inland Register

(From the June 16, 2016 edition of the Inland Register)

Inspired by Pope Francisís encyclical Laudato Sií, the Francis Youth Institute for Theology and Leadership, funded by a generous Lilly Foundation grant, offers high school juniors and seniors a transformative experience that enables them to see the connections between theology, ecology, and economics, and empowers them to respond creatively and compassionately to contemporary ethical challenges as emerging leaders in their communities.

Grounded in the Ignatian tradition, the program invites participants into a deeper relationship with God through prayer and discernment and to a new sense of the possibilities for serving God with their lives.

Students will reside on campus at Gonzaga University, receive instruction from Gonzaga faculty, and engage in prayer and discernment together. They will also be out in nature: taking in views from the top of Mount Spokane; rafting the Spokane River; visiting Sacred Heart Mission in Cataldo, Idaho; and getting their hands dirty at a Catholic Charities farm.

The institute runs from Sunday evening, July 17 through Saturday morning, July 23. Application deadline is June 30.
