Camino pilgrims to be celebrated at Spokane’s Sacred Heart Parish

the Inland Register

(From the July 21, 2016 edition of the Inland Register)

Take a walk with a real pilgrim from the ancient Camino in Spain.

Sunday, July 24, at 5 p.m., Spokane will host the first “Pilgrimage Celebration” at Sacred Heart Church, 219 E. Rockwood Blvd., honoring St. James, the patron of all who walk as pilgrims along the ancient “Camino” in Spain.

According to Msgr. Kevin Codd, pastor of Sacred Heart and author of the book To The Field of Stars: A Pilgrim’s Journey to Santiago de Compostela, there will be a pilgrim Mass and a blessing of all who plan to walk the Camino in the next year, followed by a pilgrim dinner at 6:15 p.m. Anyone (prospective walker or not) who is interested is invited to attend.

From the perspective of Msgr. Codd:

“They (pilgrims) will only come to appreciate it fully once they are walking. It is a leap of faith, and it takes courage to say ‘yes’ to this kind of enterprise, or better, adventure of the heart….”

“… (I)t has the power to change lives forever.”

“… (S)tory telling is one of the key ways pilgrims share with one another; we love to tell our stories and listen to others tell theirs; they have so much in common!”

“This idea of ‘journey’ is one which touches pilgrims deeply, especially as they reflect on the experience in the months following their pilgrimage. Life itself is a journey, a pilgrimage. Life is fragile. We need little. We count on the extraordinary goodness of others to get along.”
