St. Mary Presentation, Deer Park, will hold its eighth annual “World Famous Yard Sale” on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16 and 17.
The sale will again be hosted at the Deer Park Vet Clinic, 2915 E. Crawford St. in Deer Park.
What started out as a simple “backyard” sale at the home of a parishioner has evolved to a major fundraiser for the parish and a wonderful community event.
Parishioners (as well as others) start to put aside items for sale throughout the year. Some people even plan vacations so as not to miss working at this sale.
In recent years, over 100 different individuals have participated in various ways, such as cleaning the barn (the sale is held in the barn of the Deer Park Vet Clinic); assembling the saw horses and tables; picking up donations of furniture, tools and machinery; sorting, sizing, and pricing of clothes; merchandising and pricing the items on tables, hangers or under the two large canopies; directing parking; acting as security; cashiering; carrying out customers’ purchases; feeding those who are working at the sale; and, most importantly, kibitzing.
This event serves as a wonderful witness by the parish to the Deer Park community: the cooperation and organization of the sale, the donors who provide the wares, and those in the community who are helped, whether by purchasing needed items at a very reasonable cost, having an opportunity for socializing, or just enjoying an hour or two out of the house.
St. Mary Presentation constructed its new church building in 2010. The net proceeds from these annual sales are used toward retiring the debt on that project.
