Deer Park parish offers ‘Called and Gifted’ workshop next month

the Inland Register

(From the August 18, 2016 edition of the Inland Register)

Last April, the Called and Gifted Workshop at St. Mary Presentation Parish, Deer Park, drew over 40 parishioners as they discovered how  their God-given gifts – their charisms – empowered them to be “Christ-bearers” to a world that needs God’s love.

The workshop was an outgrowth of several months of preparation by the parish’s team: Father Kevin Oiland (pastor), Deacon Perry Pearman, and Fran Sobieski, who is a former presenter for the Called and Gifted Workshop, trained by Sherry Weddell of the Sienna Institute.

When Father Oiland told Sobieski he wanted to see the Called and Gifted Workshop happen, the team took the Called and Gifted Workshop audio presentations  and developed a syllabus with PowerPoint presentations, using personalized examples of the 24 charisms named in the Friday night Inventory.

Saturday, the workshop included a unique skit with Father Oiland graciously portraying a sick person. Volunteers with scripts showed how seven different charisms would be fleshed out as they reacted to someone who was ill.

The participants stated they felt relieved knowing that they did not have to be a Mother Theresa; they could be compassionate by demonstrating God’s love through the charisms of hospitality, or administration, or even craftsmanship.

The workshop was such a success that the team will be presenting the Called and Gifted Workshop again Friday, Oct. 28, from 7-9 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

For more information, or to register, call the parish – (509) 276-2948 – before Tuesday, Oct. 4.

This workshop is the fulfillment of a dream to focus on faith formation, as described in the Know, Love and Serve pastoral planning initiative. It is a concrete way for baptized Christian Catholics to see how everyone has a personal, unique mission to be God’s provision of love and service to the world.

The Called and Gifted Workshop teaches participants how to be used by God in the context of who God created each person to be. God-given spiritual gifts (charisms) are more than talents or skills, but are always to be used for others.

Know your God-given gifts,

Love those God places in your life,

Serve the world beyond the walls of the parish.
