Letters to the Editor

(From the August 18, 2016 edition of the Inland Register)

‘Civility and decency’

Editor:

Many members of our community have signed our names to a letter asking the U.S. presidential candidates “to engage in political dialogue that reflects the principles and values upon which this nation was founded.” This week, the letter will go to Secretary Hillary Clinton, Mr. Donald Trump, Gov. Gary Johnson, and Dr. Jill Stein, as well as their running mates and party chairs.

As Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, we are members of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, which initiated the letter campaign in an effort to prevent “rhetoric that stokes the fires of fear.” In Washington, our ministries to promote the full development of the human person and heal the hurts in our society stretch back more than 130 years. During this election, we call on the candidates to commit themselves to civility and decency so as to preserve the dignity of the human person and promote the common good.

The letter can be read on the LCWR website at:
