‘A diocese ... now poised for growth and new life’

by Bishop Thomas Daly

(From the January 21, 2016 edition of the Inland Register)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings in the Lord Jesus! For the past few months many people have been making preparations to conduct the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. It is now time for us to participate. As you know, this is my first opportunity to lead the Annual Catholic Appeal for the Diocese of Spokane and this column provides me the occasion to ask for your help in making our campaign a great success.

My ministry in California as a pastor, high school president, chaplain, and auxiliary bishop has helped to form my priestly life. That experience, combined with my interactions with the priests and laypeople within our diocese, has committed me to three important goals as your shepherd: supporting and strengthening Catholic education, promoting vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life, and the salvation of souls. This last goal is simply an old-fashioned way of reminding us of our baptismal call to holiness, which is nourished through a vigorous participation in the sacramental life of the Church.

As you read through the promotional materials for the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal, you will notice that the Appeal provides direct funding for the goals listed above, as well as so much more. Put simply, your sacrificial gifts help to make us strong. As I have said before, a strong diocese not only assists our own Catholic people, but it also supports services to the wider community through charities, health care, prison ministry, and faith formation.

I am so grateful to Bishop Skylstad and Archbishop Cupich for their solid leadership in resolving some very difficult issues which you had to face over the past decade. Their hard work, as well as your faith-filled cooperation, allows me the blessing of leading a diocese which is now poised for growth and new life. Your sacrificial gift to the Appeal will help to make that growth and new life a definite reality.

Thank you for your consideration of a financial commitment to the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please know that I entrust you and your family to the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes as I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Thomas A. Daly
Bishop of Spokane
